DIY Maintenance tips
Regular professional maintenance isn’t the only way to keep your system running to the best of its ability. There are a few routine things you could be doing as a homeowner in between your already scheduled maintenances to keep your HVAC system in tip top shape!
Whether you purchase disposable or reusable filters, having a clean air filter is one of the most important parts of making sure your HVAC system is receiving proper air flow. Your air filter should be changed or cleaned every couple of months; however we recommend more frequent changes for homes with pets or occupants who suffer from asthma or allergies. Filters that are caked with dirt, dust and pet dander decrease the air flow getting into your system causing it to work harder than it should. The air you breathe in may also become contaminated with the particles stuck to your filter which could result in health issues.
Keep the area around the outdoor unit clear
When plants, bushes and weeds surround your outdoor unit it can reduce air flow. Keeping the space around your condensing unit clear and rinsing it every once in a while will help insure it’s running properly. Please take extra care while rinsing your unit down. Be sure to turn the power to the unit off and rinse gently with a water hose. DO NOT use a power washer as this can cause damage to the unit’s delicate fins.
Check your Thermostat
Check to make sure your thermostat is operating properly and the battery life is good. Upgrading an old mechanical type thermostat can also improve the accuracy of the temperature inside your home. A programmable thermostat allows you to preset temperatures for different times of day, while a smart thermostat allows you to control the temperature remotely from a smart device.
